RANSOMWARE

A type of malware that denies access to the victim data, threatening to publish or delete it unless a ransom is paid. Advanced ransomware uses cryptoviral extortion, encrypting the victim’s data so that it is impossible to decrypt without the decryption key.



WannaCry

WannaCry was introduced in 2017 through phishing emails. WannaCry caused around
$4 billion in damage. It reached around 200,000 people worldwide including universities,
hospitals, and huge companies such as FedEx and Nissan.

CryptoLocker

CryptoLocker was introduced in 2013 and contained an encription key that
made it difficult to be defeated. Cryptolocker was spread through emails
and reached over 200,000 Windows systems. It caused over $3
million in damages.
